PROCESSION ON THE EVE OF THAI PUSSAM
Singapore February 1999
The night before Thai Pussam, a Procession leaves
from the temple on Keong Saik Road. This is a small Hindu temple. We were not sure why the
procession left from such a small temple but perhaps it was because, by coincidence, China
town opened for Lunar New Year festivities on the same day and traffic near the larger
Hindu temple was terrible.
It was interesting to note that as the procession passed through southern China town, many
of the Chinese people prayed to the passing Chariot. This is typical of the Chinese who
will pray to everything "just to hedge their bets."
What you probably want to know is WHY this
procession takes place and the nature of the celebration.
Well we never figured it out. It just happens.
