Symphony of a Thousand

Somehow the SSO music directors convinced their sponsors to put on Mahler's 8th (Symphony of a Thousand). It will be performed during the Arts Fest in May 2004. This will be a massive undertaking. A professional chorus of 80 strong will be flown in from some Eastern Block country to bolster our numbers (and of course to provide substance). The children's choir hails from Beijing where LY will be travelling over the course of the next year as he prepares them for this event. Singapore doesn't have (and likely will never have) the artistic resources to put on a production like this stocked solely with local talent. Fortunately, deep pockets and strong support mean conductors needn't be constrained by this limitation. And if THAT doesn't get Singapore on the international music map, get ready for our encore: The Glagolitic Mass the following November.
